Committee charge

 

Committee A is charged with reviewing the content of The Nucleus, test driving the new Virtual Lounge, bringing in new scholarship contacts, and suggesting new ways to bring physics students to the site and getting them to contribute and participate.

Background Information

---SPS is part of an NSF-funded effort (NSDL, the National Science Digital Library), led by AAPT and involving APS and AAS, to continue development of ComPADRE, the physics digital library. The student component of ComPADRE is called The Nucleus (www.compadre.org/student) and it features an Undergraduate Research Clearinghouse, Scholarship/Fellowship Clearinghouse, Chapter of the Month features, book and text reviews, discussion threads, surveys and polls, etc.

STEM Bill – Action Item

Draft a motion made to have the President of SPS send a letter of support for the STEM Scholarship Database Act (House Resolution 5139) to the congressmen who are on the committee for this bill. (A bill that would establish a national scholarship search database focusing on science)

 

Committee responsibility – to draft the motion to be made

 

Dave D typed the motion to be made at the council meeting (See Attached)

 

Motion made to present the draft motion to the council – passes

 

Possible Action Act

Draft a statement for the SPS Council in support of the STEM Scholarship Database Act (House Resolution 5139) – Discussion and no recommendation to be made

 

“The Nucleus” - Action Items (Recommended)

• All zones will have a page on the nucleus by Jan 1, 2007

• Each AZC and ZC will find and add four scholarships to the nucleus by Jan 1, 2007

o AZCs must contact Dave Donnelly for scholarship permissions

• Each AZC and ZC will have the goal have five new club pages created on the nucleus by March 1, 2007

• Each AZC and ZC will register and get five other people to register by Jan 1, 2007

• Recommendation that, at each Zone Meeting, “The Nucleus” plays a prominent role by way of presentation, workshop, table display, etc.

 

Committee Responsibilities

• Each member of the committee will be responsible for overseeing and confirming that the previous recommended goals are fulfilled in the following zones

o CT – 1,2,3

o GS – 4,5,6

o JG & CG – 7,8,9,10

o EL – 11,12,13

o SS – 14,15,16

o DD – 17,18

• Text Book section – the committee will develop an action plan to fix the problems on the text book section by March 1, 2007

• Each committee member will commit to viewing the discussion group (the lounge) on a regular basis and starting one original thread by March 1, 2007
